Antivirus/Anti-Spyware

What's the best antivirus for me to use?
The best antivirus is the one you keep up to date and use on a regular basis. No antivirus program will prevent you from ever getting a virus, but as long as keep your antivirus up to date and scan your system on a regular basis, you will greatly reduce your risk of infection. The University of Arizona has a license for the use of Sophos anti-virus on any computer owned or used by UA faculty, staff and students. This includes personal computers.

I think I have a virus, what should I do?
The first thing to do is to disconnect your computer from the network/internet. This does two things:
1. Prevents your computer from infecting others and...
2. Limits what can be done to your machine by the virus' author/controller.
Next, you should contact your department's technical support personel for help/advice on disinfecting your computer.

My computer is very slow and I keep getting pop-ups, what's going on?
You are probably dealing with virus' kin; malware. These programs can infect your computer from numerous sources, including: compromised websites, software downloads bundled with adware, and previous viral infestation. Unfortunately, there is no easy solution to a malware infection as it is often accompanied by viral infection. The first thing to do is to install and run an anti-virus program such as Sophos anti-virus. Next, download and install an anti-spyware/anti-malware program. The U of A has also licensed CounterSpy for free use by faculty, staff and students. For machines not owned by the U of A, you may also want to look at SpyBot, and Ad-Aware.
These programs are often able to remove all software from your computer, but they are not always successful and they do not remove viruses. If the problem persists after disinfection, please contact your department's technical support personel.

New Computer

I just got a new computer, now what?

The first thing you will want to do is to register your computer for campus network access. There website to register your new computer is http://dhcp.arizona.edu. You should do this from a computer that is already connected to the net, or you may do this from home. If your new computer is a laptop, you will want to register both the wired and wireless adapters.

Now you want to make sure that your operating system and antivirus are up to date. For OS X users, go to the Apple menu on the top left corner of your screen and choose "Software Update". For Windows users, choose "Windows Update" from "Start" » "All Programs". You will need to be connected to the internet prior to performing these tasks. The method for updating your antivirus will depend on what you are using. Please see the help menu of your antivirus program for instructions. If you do not have an anti-virus program installed, please see the antivirus section on this page.

You will probably also want some additional software for your new computer (see the software section of this page) as well as setting up a printer, and getting connected to the wireless network on campus.

Printer

Does the deparment have a printer I can use?
There is a printer available for faculty/staff and graduate student use in the Life Sciences South building. Additionally, most labs have a printer available for srudent use, but you will want to ask the lab manager/PI for permission before using it.
How do I install the deparmental printer?
You will first need to see the accounting office for a code to use the copier/printer. Once you have received your code, you may proceed to the departmental printer insallation instructions available here. Login Required

Security

Do I have to have a password?
YES! According to University of Arizona policy as stated in Minimum Information Security Standards:
All devices and/or accounts with access to university resources shall require adequate passwords or an alternate secure authentication system (e.g., biometrics or Smart Cards). This standard applies to university employees, affiliates, associates and volunteers, as well as contractors and vendors, with access to those resources. Students are strongly encouraged to implement passwords on personal systems. University computer account owners have a responsibility to construct, secure, and maintain their passwords in accordance with the requirements specified in the Guidelines for Password/Pass phrase Construction and Management available at http://security.arizona.edu/pdf/PasswordConstruction.pdf.

How can I make a hard password I can actually remember?
The easiest thing to to is to use a pass-phrase. Most people seem to think that the only way to have a secure password is to use something like
@Ab#u5R4Pef66sWuGeCUch$jU
Let's face it, remembering a password like that is impractical (not to mention close to impossible), but what about this:
Molecular, Cellular & Developemental Biology at the University of Arizona
Now take the first letter of each word and any puctuation put them together. You should end up with:
M,C&DBatUoA
It's a very strong password, but remembering it is pretty easy.
For more information on password construction, please see the password construction pdf created by UITS

Software

Does the department have a license for...?

Currently, the departments of Molecular & Cellular Biology and Cell Biology & Anatomy do not carry any department wide licenses. There are departments on campus that do have such licensing agreements but they have not proven to be financially viable for our deparments.

The University of Arizona does maintain licenses for many useful programs. More information on Universit licensed software is available at: th University of Arizona Site Licensing website (https://sitelicense.arizona.edu/)
Where can I get education versions of Microsoft and Adobe products?
Educational versions of many software titles are available at the University of Arizona Bookstore's main campus location. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Microsoft Office (Standard and Professional)
  • Adobe Acrobat (Standard and Professional)
  • Adobe Photoshop
  • All Adobe Creative Suites
  • And many more...
For more information, please visit the Licensing and Software sections of the University of Arizona Bookstore's website.

Wireless

How can I get wireless access in Life Sciences South?

Undergraduate Students and visiting scholars can obtain connection information for the LSS_Common network from the LSS reception desk, located on the 4th floor of Life Sciences South.

Gradute Students, those undergraduates working in a lab in LSS, and post-docs working in the building may request connection information for the LSS_Labs network by emailing Matthew Knatz <mcknatz AT email DOT arizona DOT edu>.
How can I get wireless access elsewhere on Campus?
Wireless connection information for the campus at large is available on the UITS UA wireless website. Please note that some services such as Lab Shares and printing are only available to those connected to the UAWiFi network, and cannot be accessed through UAPublic.
